2024 Barber Race

Leeds, Alabama (Sunday, April 28, 2024) – Dale Coyne Racing’s Jack Harvey came back from opening lap contact that sent him to the back of the field to finish 13th in Sunday’s Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix. His teammate, Luca Ghiotto in the Dale Coyne Racing with RWR entry, also put in a solid performance in what was his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES race by taking the checkered flag on the lead lap in 21st place.

• Harvey got spun around in Turn 1 on the opening lap of the 90-lap event.
• Fortunately for the driver of the No. 18 INVST car, he was able to continue, despite falling to 26th from his 22nd place on the starting grid.
• He took advantage of an early full course caution to make his first stop on Lap 7 and was running 23rd on the Lap 11 restart.
• Harvey then made his second stop on Lap 35 and once again took advantage of a full course caution to stop for fuel and a set of alternate Firestone tires on Lap 46, exiting pit lane in 21st.
• Thanks to the team’s strategy and his on-track pace, Harvey found himself in 13th place following his final stop on Lap 75
• Harvey could have potentially finished in the top ten had it not been for a final full course caution on Lap 85 that allowed the fuel saving cars ahead of him to make it to the end.

“It was a lively race today. I seem to keep getting caught up in other people’s incidents. At the wrong place, at the wrong time. I spun in Turn 1 and went backwards through the gravel, but somehow, we still finished 13th. I think had that last yellow not happened, we could have had a top 10 finish today. It was a great strategy call by everyone on the 18 stand. I keep telling everybody, I feel like the momentum is building and whether there’s a bit of help of not, we’re showing it. I think we could have transferred to the second round of qualifying yesterday, and we finished 13th today. Overall, it was a pretty good weekend here at Barber Motorsports Park. Hopefully we’re building a little bit of momentum for May and we can keep this No. 18 INVST Dale Coyne Racing Honda on the sharper end and keep improving every weekend.”

• Ghiotto was making his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES race start at Barber Motorsports Park after having only driven the car for the first time earlier this week during practice 1.
• The rookie lost a few positions at the start but kept up with the cars ahead of him.
• He took advantage of a full course caution to make his first stop on Lap 7 and continued to maintain a strong pace throughout his second stint.
• On an alternate pit strategy, he ran as high as fifth before making his second stop on Lap 39.
• Ghiotto returned to the pits on Lap 47 during a full course caution for a set of the alternate Firestone tire.
• He made his final pit stop on Lap 56, exiting pit lane in 24th place and went on to take the checkered flag in 21st place.
• The former Formula 2 driver finished ahead of experienced drivers such as Pato O’Ward and Alexander Rossi.

“It was a long race and I’m happy that I got to the end. This is probably the most physical race car to drive in the world and I honestly was not sure I was fit enough to do a 90-lap race! So that was the first goal and I’m happy that we made it. As for the race itself, I think I made a little bit too many mistakes. Doing pit stops, everything was new for me, especially going from the reds to the primary tires. Every lap was something new. On one side, I’m happy that I had that experience because I learned more from those mistakes, and I’ll be more prepared when I get to Indy. I’m really looking forward to it now. It feels good now to know that I’ve been through an entire race weekend. When everything is new everything is stressful, and it was a busy week so next time in Indy it will much more relax and I can just focus on driving.”
